IPMS 2024 – International Perspective on Post-Mining Approaches in Türkiye

The International Post-Mining Symposium (IPMS) 2024 was held in Zonguldak between 22 and 24 May 2024. It was the first comprehensive international event in Turkey to address the environmental, social, economic and cultural impacts arising after mining activities. The event made a significant contribution to bringing the concept of post-mining to the forefront of academic and sectoral discussions in our country.
The symposium was attended by academics from universities, public institutions and organisations, private sector representatives, professional organisations, researchers and students. Presentations and sessions focused on topics such as land rehabilitation, environmental monitoring approaches, industrial heritage conservation, water management, waste site remediation, socio-economic transformation and sustainable planning.

One of the most important outcomes of IPMS 2024 was the emphasis that post-mining processes are not limited to technical intervention but also have ecological, social, cultural and economic dimensions. In this context, it was stated that interdisciplinary cooperation should be strengthened.
The technical field trip organised as part of the event programme offered participants the opportunity to examine industrial heritage structures, former production areas and areas requiring rehabilitation in the Zonguldak basin. Field observations supported the application of theoretical knowledge in real-world contexts.IPMS 2024 raised awareness about post-mining area management in Turkey and encouraged knowledge sharing among public, academic and industry representatives. This successful organisation laid the foundation for a broader, application and solution-oriented vision for IPMS 2026.
