IPMS 2024 – International Perspective on Post-Mining Approaches in Türkiye

The International Post-Mining Symposium (IPMS) 2024 took place in Zonguldak from May 22–24, 2024. It is the first international event to address the environmental, social, economic, and cultural impacts of mining activities in Türkiye. The event significantly contributed to the establishment of the concept of post-mining on the academic and sectoral agenda in Turkey.

The symposium was attended by academics from universities, public institutions and organizations, private sector representatives, professional organizations, researchers, and students. Presentations and sessions focused on topics such as land rehabilitation, environmental monitoring approaches, industrial heritage protection, water management, waste site remediation, socio-economic transformation, and sustainable planning.

One of the most important outcomes of IPMS 2024 is the emphasis on the fact that post-mining processes are not limited to technical interventions but also have ecological, social, cultural, and economic dimensions. In this context, it was stated that interdisciplinary collaborations should be strengthened.

A technical field trip, organized as part of the event program, provided participants with the opportunity to conduct on-site investigations of industrial heritage structures, former production areas, and areas requiring rehabilitation in the Zonguldak basin. Field observations supported the application of theoretical knowledge to real-world applications.

IPMS 2024 raised awareness about post-mining land management in Türkiye and fostered knowledge sharing among the public, academia, and industry representatives. This successful event laid the foundation for a broader, application- and solution-focused vision for IPMS 2026.
